At the very least, Jesus is teaching here that we are to be very good to the people we know at their time of urgent need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In relation to the commandment. “Love your neighbor as yourself”, the question is asked, “Who is my neighbor?”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jesus answers with the account of the good Samaritan and a question of His own, “Who was a neighbor to the one who fell among robbers?”. Notice that Jesus did not ask, “Who loved his neighbor?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the strictest sense, “neighbor” is defined as “someone whose home is near your home”. We could broaden that out further to mean, “someone you are acquainted with”, or simply, “someone you know”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, \u201cTeacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?\u201d26 He said to him, \u201cWhat is written in the law? What is your reading of it?\u201d27 So he answered and said, \u201c \u2018You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,\u2019 and \u2018your neighbor as yourself.\u2019 \u201d28 And He said to him, \u201cYou have answered rightly; do this and you will live.\u201d29 But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, \u201cAnd who is my neighbor?\u201d30 Then Jesus answered and said: \u201cA certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. 33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was.
