Contrasting against false Christians who do not have the Spirit, Jude commands his readers: But you, beloved, keep yourselves in the love of God by praying in the Holy Spirit.<\/summary>\n

Jud 1:4-21 TKJU<\/a><\/strong> 4<\/sup> For there are certain men that crept in unexpectedly,<\/mark> who evidently were ordained to this condemnation a long while ago, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. 5<\/sup> Therefore I will put you in remembrance, though you once knew this, how the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those that did not believe.<\/mark> 6<\/sup> And the angels which did not keep their first estate, but left their own habitation, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day. 7<\/sup> Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities all around them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. 8<\/sup> Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise government, and speak evil of dignitaries. 9<\/sup> Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring a railing accusation against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.” 10<\/sup> But these speak evil of those things which they do not know:<\/mark> But what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves. 11<\/sup> Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the contrariety of Korah. 12<\/sup> These are spots in your feasts of love, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: They are clouds without water,<\/mark> carried about by winds; trees whose fruit withers, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; 13<\/sup> raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever. 14<\/sup> And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these people<\/em>, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, 15<\/sup> to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed with ungodly living<\/em>, and of all their fierce speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.” 16<\/sup> These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaks great swelling words, having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage.<\/mark> 17<\/sup> But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; 18<\/sup> how they told you there would be mockers in the last time, who would walk after their own ungodly lusts. 19<\/sup> These are those who separate themselves, sensual, not having the Spirit.<\/mark> 20<\/sup> But you, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit<\/mark>, 21<\/sup> keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

We learn from the Apostle Paul that praying in the Spirit is praying in tongues, speaking to oneself and to God in an unknown language.<\/summary>\n

1Co 14:2-28 TKJU<\/a><\/strong> 2<\/sup> For he that speaks in an unknown tongue does not speak to men, but to God<\/mark>: For no man understands him; nevertheless<\/mark> in the spirit he speaks mysteries.<\/mark> 3<\/sup> But he that prophesies speaks edification, exhortation, and comfort to men. 4<\/sup> He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself<\/mark>; but he that prophesies edifies the church. 5<\/sup> I would like that you all spoke with tongues<\/mark>, but far more that you prophesied: For greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks with tongues, unless he interprets, that the church may receive edification. 6<\/sup> Now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? 7<\/sup> And even things without life bringing forth sound, whether pipe or harp, unless they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? 8<\/sup> For if the trumpet gives an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself for the battle? 9<\/sup> So likewise you, unless you utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? For you shall speak into the air. 10<\/sup> There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. 11<\/sup> Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the voice, I shall be to him that speaks a barbarian, and he who speaks shall be a barbarian to me. 12<\/sup> Even so you, as much as you are zealous for spiritual gifts, seek that you may excel to the edifying of the church. 13<\/sup> For which reason let him that speaks in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. 14<\/sup> For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15<\/sup> What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding: I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. 16<\/sup> Otherwise when you bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupies the room of the unlearned say “Amen” at your giving of thanks, seeing he does not understand what you say? 17<\/sup> For you truly give thanks well, but the other is not edified. 18<\/sup> I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than you all<\/mark>: 19<\/sup> Yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue. 20<\/sup> Brethren, do not be children in understanding: Yet in malice be children, but in understanding be men. 21<\/sup> In the law it is written, “With men of other tongues and other lips I will speak to this people; and yet, for all that, they will not hear Me,” says the Lord. 22<\/sup> Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those that believe, but to unbelievers: Moreover prophesying does not serve unbelievers, but is for those who believe. 23<\/sup> If therefore the whole church comes together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that you are beside yourselves? 24<\/sup> But if all prophesy, and there comes in one that does not believe, or one unlearned, he is convinced by all, he is discerned by all: 25<\/sup> And in this way the secrets of his heart are made apparent; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is truly in you. 26<\/sup> How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, every one of you has a psalm, has a doctrine, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Paul commanded to fan into flame the gift of God within -the Spirit- that was imparted through the laying on of hands. <\/summary>\n

1Ti 4:14 TKJU<\/a><\/strong> Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2Ti 1:6-8 MKJV1962<\/a><\/strong> 6<\/sup> Therefore I remind you to inflame anew the gift of God, which is in you by the putting on of my hands. 7<\/sup> For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 8<\/sup> Therefore you should not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor [of] me His prisoner. But be partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to [the] power of God,<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

The gift of God that comes through the laying on of hands is the Holy Spirit. <\/summary>\n

Act 8:12-19 MKJV1962<\/a><\/strong> 12<\/sup> But when they believed Philip preaching the gospel, the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13<\/sup> Then Simon himself believed also, and being baptized, he continued with Philip. And seeing miracles and mighty works happening, he was amazed. 14<\/sup> And the apostles in Jerusalem hearing that Samaria had received the Word of God, they sent Peter and John to them; 15<\/sup> who when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive [the] Holy Spirit. 16<\/sup> For as yet He had not fallen on any of them, they were baptized only in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17<\/sup> Then they laid [their] hands on them, and they received [the] Holy Spirit. 18<\/sup> And when Simon saw that the Holy Spirit was given through laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, 19<\/sup> saying, Give me this power also, that on whomever I lay hands, he may receive [the] Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And he said, Behold me, Lord. 11<\/sup> And the Lord [said] to him, Arise and go into the street which is called Straight and inquire in [the] house of Judas for [one] called Saul of Tarsus. For behold, he is praying, 12<\/sup> and has seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in and putting [his] hand on him so that he might receive his sight. 13<\/sup> And Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard from many of this man, how many evil things he has done to Your saints at Jerusalem. 14<\/sup> And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your Name. 15<\/sup> But the Lord said to him, Go! For this one is a chosen vessel to Me, to bear My name before nations and kings and the sons of Israel. 16<\/sup> For I will show him what great things he must suffer for My name’s sake. 17<\/sup> And Ananias went and entered into the house. And putting his hands on him, [he] said, Brother Saul, the Lord, Jesus, who appeared to you in the way in which you came, has sent me to you that you might see and be filled with [the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Act 19:1-6 MKJV1962<\/a><\/strong> 1<\/sup> And it happened in the [time] Apollos was at Corinth, Paul [was] passing through the higher parts to Ephesus. And finding certain disciples, 2<\/sup> he said to them, Have you received [the] Holy Spirit since you believed? And they said to him, We did not so much as hear whether [the] Holy Spirit is. 3<\/sup> And he said to them, Then to what were you baptized? And they said, To John’s baptism. 4<\/sup> And Paul said, John truly baptized [with] the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe into Him coming after him, that is, into Jesus Christ. 5<\/sup> And hearing, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6<\/sup> And as Paul laid [his] hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heb 6:1-3 MKJV1962<\/a><\/strong> 1<\/sup> Therefore, having left the discourse of the beginning of Christ, let us go on to full growth, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2<\/sup> of [the] baptisms, of doctrine, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3<\/sup> And this we will do, if God permits.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

Jesus had commanded not to go anywhere without first receiving power from the Holy Spirit. <\/summary>\n

Act 1:4-8 MKJV1962<\/a><\/strong> 4<\/sup> And having met with [them], He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to await the promise of the Father which you heard from Me. 5<\/sup> For John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized in [the] Holy Spirit not many days from now. 6<\/sup> Then, indeed, these coming together, they asked Him, saying, Lord, do You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel? 7<\/sup> And He said to them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father has put in His own authority. 8<\/sup> But you shall receive power, the Holy Spirit coming upon you. And you shall be witnesses to Me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and to [the] end of the earth.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

The Holy Spirit came with speaking in tongues and is referred to as both “the promise” and “the gift” of the Holy Spirit.<\/summary>\n

Act 2:1-39 MKJV1962<\/a><\/strong> 1<\/sup> And in the fulfilling of the day of Pentecost, they were all with one accord in one place. 2<\/sup> And suddenly a sound came out of the heaven as borne along by the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3<\/sup> And tongues as of fire appeared to them, being distributed; and it sat upon each of them. 4<\/sup> And they were all filled of the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them utterance<\/mark>. 5<\/sup> And dwelling at Jerusalem there were Jews, devout men out of every nation under heaven. 6<\/sup> But this sound occurring, the multitude came together and were confounded, because they each heard them speaking in his own dialect. 7<\/sup> And they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, Behold, are not these who speak all Galileans? 8<\/sup> And how do we each hear in our own dialect in which we were born? 9<\/sup> Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10<\/sup> Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya around Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11<\/sup> Cretans and Arabians, we hear them speaking the great things of God in our own languages [These people were experiencing the Gift of Interpretation of Tongues]<\/mark>. 12<\/sup> And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying to one another, What does this mean? 13<\/sup> But others mocking said, These men are full of sweet wine [These people were NOT experiencing the Gift of Interpretation of Tongues]<\/mark>. 14<\/sup> But Peter, standing up with the Eleven, lifted up his voice and said to them, Men, Jews, and all who dwell at Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to my words. 15<\/sup> For these are not drunk as you suppose, for it is [the] third hour of the day. 16<\/sup> But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17<\/sup> And it shall be in the last days, says God, I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh<\/mark>.
